You face countless decisions each day, both in your personal and professional life.

There’s a difference.

What is a core value?

I define a core value as the driving force behind your decision-making. Simply stated, your values help you make decisions with ease. (Who doesn’t need more ease?)

How do personal values differ from company values?

Think of your company as an entity separate from yourself, with multiple moving parts and its own ecosystem. Yes, you’re a big part of it, but it’s not you.

And if you’re making company decisions based solely on your personal values, you could be negatively impacting your leadership, teams, and the company.

Look at your team to identify your company values.

That’s right… Instead of looking inward to identify your company’s top 5 core values, you’re going to look outward at your company leaders and their teams and what they do that positively impacts the organization.

The importance of identifying and sharing your company’s core values

Finding your company’s values doesn’t stop after you’ve identified them…

Your company’s core values are the beacon you and your team will look to for guidance whenever decisions need to be made.

It’s crucial to ensure your leaders and their teams can name and understand each core value and its priority, so everyone can make decisions for the company with ease and take action with integrity.

Ready to identify your company’s core values in 5 simple steps?

    You need:

    • 5 minutes to watch the video above

    • A Sharpie

    • Post-it notes

And since I’m all about ease, you can also download this worksheet and a video transcript if you need them. (see above!)

5 minutes. 5 steps. 5 core values. Does it get any easier than that?

    Step 1: Select

Choose four of the top players on your team—people who represent what you want more of in your company. They perform at a high level, uplift others, and get things done in ways that feel good.

Write each of those four names on a Post-It.

    Step 2: Identify

Identify four qualities, attributes, and characteristics for each person you named in Step 1 and write each trait down on separate Post-Its. You should have a total of 16 traits you want to see more of at your company

Stick each trait Post-It under the person who embodies it.

    Step 3: Organize

Look at the lists of traits under each name and look for any duplicates.

If you find duplicate traits, stick them on top of one another. This serves as a major clue as to what traits are positively impacting your business.

    Step 4: Prioritize

Take the stacks of Post-Its that have duplicate traits and move them to the top because these are the most significant.

Then, look at all the other trait Post-Its, and in descending order (most important to least important), place them all under the top trait(s).

    Step 5: Choose

Edit down the list of traits to the five that are the most important to your business.

Before you toss any away, check in with yourself (and even with your top leadership if you want). But it’s totally possible that it’s as simple as deleting all but the top five. Don’t second-guess yourself!

That’s it! You have your top five company core values. Told you it was quick and easy.

Now, go share them with your team… and soon you’ll notice the positive impact that a clearly defined set of core values has on your company when everyone is working in alignment.
